Graphite drawings and oil paintings
My mother loved to paint. Watercolor was her medium and she was very talented. My older sister, also very talented, is a professional artist who also paints with watercolor.
It never occurred to me that I could draw or paint and I never attempted either until after my Mom moved to The Hermitage in Richmond in her late 80's. The Hermitage has a weekly art workshop with a professional instructor. Mom wouldn't go unless I took her. After over a year of sitting and watching her paint, I decided to paint something, just to relieve boredom.
The workshop instructor gave me a few pointers and asked whether I had taken any art before. When I said no, she said I should take some classes at some point from a 'good' source, like VMFA.
So, I put art classes on my Retirement To Do list and about 10 years later I landed in Robert Louis Caldwell's 'Draw and Paint' class. That was the beginning of my art career about 3 years ago. Rather than watercolor, I have been working with graphite and oil.
I'm glad Mom wouldn't go to the workshop by herself.
